Broadband internet speed & home wi-fi set-up help

internet access

broadband speed & wi-fi set up

ADSL, or 'Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line', is a type of broadband connection that uses existing copper telephone lines to deliver internet access.   The 'Asymmetric' part means that download speeds are typically faster than upload speeds. . .  which suits most home users, who primarily consume online content.

Widely available and relatively affordable at around £30 a month, ADSL offers download speeds of up to 25Mbps. . .  usually ample for movie streaming and most gaming applications.

high speed fibre

Internet delivered by optical fibre (or 'Fibre Broadband' ), boasting speeds of up to 150Mbps is now available, but largely limited to urban centres.   Costing approximately 50% more than ADSL, even delivering half of the quoted maximum speed, fibre broadband is still a significant step up in value.

•  BONUS:  Can I receive fibre broadband?

High speed fibre broadband is now available in most urban areas across Shropshire and North Wales, including;  Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Corwen, Wrexham, Welshpool, Whitchurch & Llangollen.

If in doubt, call Dave at oztech and he will check the availability in your postcode!

Unfortunately, the more rural Welsh Borders are currently less well served, and broadband connection may be limited to ADSL, 4G mobile. . .  or Satellite (more fully described below).

mobile broadband

4G mobile internet is offered by most carriers at around £30 per month but, despite an advertised maximum speed of 150Mbps, you could only reasonably expect an average of around 30Mbps (the same as ADSL ).   Remember that mobile connection is subject to local geography, and your proximity to a mast.

5G mobile offers higher speeds, but is only accessible in more densely populated urban areas. . .  where fibre broadband is likely to be a more cost effective, and reliable, option!

satellite (starlink)

With set-up costs often exceeding £500, plus monthly fees up to £200, satellite broadband may still be worthy of consideration for business users, where no other options exist.

improving speed. . .

Getting reliably fast wi-fi around your entire home can sometimes be a challenge.   With so many electronic devices, appliances and architectural features that can cause interference, even the most powerful wi-fi router can miss some spots. . .  such as that annoying dead zone in an upstairs bedroom where the kids want to stream Disney Plus, or causing you to struggle for connection in the man shed or garage.

Because dependable wi-fi is just as important as electricity in many homes, you may want to read through the BONUS tips below, even before calling oztech for advice.

•  BONUS:  tips to improve broadband speed

Sometimes the simplest of changes can result in a huge improvement.   If you're suffering with slow speeds, loss of signal, or patchy wi-fi coverage, here are several things you can try which may boost your broadband signal.

. . .first steps

Run a speed test:   Use one of the many free speed test websites (such as fast.com ) to monitor your internet speed and identify potential issues.

Restart your router:   Just like computers, routers can benefit from a restart to clear out temporary errors or glitches.

Reboot your computer:   If you have restarted your router, but the issue remains, try rebooting your PC, laptop or other Smart device set-ups so that they look for the (hopefully improved ) signal!

Move the router:   Reposition your router to a higher, open location, further away from walls, floors, and electrical devices.

Reduce the load:   Reduce the number of Smart device set-ups connected to your wi-fi and, if possible, use an Ethernet cable for Smart device set-ups that use a lot of bandwidth, such as Smart TVs and Gaming consoles.

Close other applications:   Many applications that run in the background can consume bandwidth.

. . .a little more technical

Don't panic!   These steps are really best carried out by oztech during a remote TeamViewer session or an engineering visit.

Scan for malware:   Malware, including 'Ad Trackers' will seriously slow down your internet speed, so make sure to run regular virus scans. . .  and remember to check for updates frequently!

Secure your network:   Use a strong, unique password for your Wi-Fi network and consider enabling encryption (WPA2 or WPA3 ).

Change Wi-Fi channels:   If you're experiencing interference, try changing the Wi-Fi channel on your router to a less crowded one.

Check for firmware updates:   Router manufacturers often release firmware updates that improve performance, and security.

Check your devices:   Some older device may not be compatible with the latest wi-fi standards.

. . .your next step

Call oztech to have your questions answered, or to arrange a visit at your convenience.

. . .some possible solutions

Your oztech engineer will suggest the easiest, fastest and most affordable solution... which may include;

Updating your devices:   Ensure that your connected devices (computers, phones, TV, tablets etc.) have the latest operating system and browser versions.

Consider a router upgrade:   If your router is old, it may not be able to handle the latest broadband speeds.

Use a wi-fi extender:   If you have dead spots in your home, locating a wi-fi extender or 'repeater' in those areas may be the answer.

Install a wi-fi booster:   A wi-fi 'booster' does exactly what it says on the tin!   Connected by a short cable to the router, it amplifies or 'boosts' the signal.

(Wi-fi boosters and extenders are more fully described in the main content below )

to extend, or boost?

Although the terms 'wi-fi extender' (or 'repeater') and 'wi-fi booster' are often used interchangeably, they have very distinct meanings. . .  and applications.

  wi-fi extenders

As the name suggests, these devices extend wi-fi coverage.   Located away from your router, closer to the area where you need improved coverage, they capture the existing wireless signal and rebroadcast it as a separate network. . .  effectively increasing its range.

This increase in range is why extenders are most often used to provide connection to outbuildings, garages and barns, or communicate with remote security cameras, which is why wi-fi extenders often represent a cost-effective solution for agricultural & farming use.

•  BONUS:  More about wi-fi extenders. . .

Wi-fi extenders (or repeaters ) are connected to your router either wirelessly or, for the best results, via an Ethernet cable.

For stone built or listed properties, where drilling walls to run a cable may not be possible, there are adapters allowing the existing electricity circuits to be used instead of dedicated Ethernet

While extending the range, wi-fi repeaters potentially reduce the bandwidth (speed), as they are essentially creating a new network using a shared radio frequency.

'Dual channel' or 'dual band' repeaters address this issue by utilising two different frequencies. . .  one to communicate with the router, and the other to broadcast your wi-fi signal.   In either case there is always a little bandwidth reduction or increased 'latency' (the time it takes to process a signal ), which can make wi-fi extenders unsuitable for real-time gaming.

  wi-fi boosters

A wi-fi booster also connects to your router, usually via a wired connection, and simply amplifies the signal strength. . .  improving performance within the existing coverage area.

Whilst a signal booster won't increase the range of your coverage, its main use is to improve signal strength in 'Dead Zones', areas of your home with poor reception.
